FEUDAL SYSTEM
One of the reasons the feudal system evolved is because people needed to defend their homes and lands. Another reason is that kings and emperors were too weak to maintain law and order.
Below the monarch were the most powerful lords - dukes and counts. Below the lords were the lesser lords, below them were the knights, and then there were the peasants.
In medieval Europe, a lord who was granted land in exchanged for service and loyalty to a greater lord.
A few acres to hundreds of square miles and included peasants to work the land, as well as any towns or buildings.
